The   Ditch

As a young child, I remember,
every weekday without fail,
in the afternoons, how I would go,
to the mailbox for our mail.
And I played a silly little game,
that made me feel so rich,
along the way,
I'd always say,
"down the ditch...
up the ditch.
Oh, what a thrill,
to run down that hill,
and right back up again,
for it brought me to the mailbox,
and the letters folks would send.
And I knew that I was going straight,
and never had to rome,
for, "down the ditch... up the ditch,"
would carry me back home.
As I look back upon those days,
so free from care and strife,
I find a blessing in the lesson,
I've learned about this life.

Each one of us has a destiny,
and seeds which we must sew,
there are valleys...
there are mountains...
and, each helps us to grow.
For, "down the ditch," of sorrow,
of hopelessness and night,
is followed soon by, "up the ditch,"
of happiness and light;
if we can learn, along this road,
life's ditches to employ,
that, "down the ditch," of sorrow,
leads to, "up the ditch," of joy.

Then we'll understand how ditches,
along the roads we've trod,
helped bring us to our destiny,
and keep us close to God.
Life's ditches are to cause our hurried paces to be slowed,
so we know we are going straight,
as we walk along life's road.
If only we'll remember,
our darkness will not last,
we go down, then,
go up again,
and find, this too, shall pass.

May our road never be so smoothe,
that we are never rich,
from the joy of helping someone up,
who's fallen in life's ditch.
And, let us ever be prepared,
that our souls not be lost,
for all will reach life's highway's end,
life's final ditch to cross.

If Jesus is your savior,
no valley is too wide,
that ditch will lead you to your Home,
just on the other side.

So, do not fear the ditches,
for you're never quite so rich,
as when, in childlike faith you say,
"Down the ditch..."
"Up the ditch."
Our ditches bring us to the precious joys that we have known,
and, "down the ditch..."
"Up the ditch,"
will one day, bring us home!
